Artist Statement:  Aroha Pūmau, kōmiro ana te ki te kōpū o te whenua.

An acclamation of the state and joy of hapūtanga, the enduring energy of life developing within the womb.  Aroha Pūmau illustrates a mother’s excitement and unconditional love growing, whirling and swirling as she feels each anticipated movement of her baby.  This state also acknowledges children who remain in the spiritual realm as well as those whose time in Te Ao Marama might be brief but deeply meaningful.

Maakarita is an advocate of traditional Māori birthing practices through the arts of Te Whare Pora, the domain of Hineteiwaiwa, a midwifery standards reviewer, mother and grandmother.
