Motuhia is part of a series about the maramataka – the Māori lunar calendar. Before creating, Jacob would go outside to look at the moon and feel its energy. This art piece was created based on his experience of this phase of the moon and his knowledge of Maramataka. He has adapted several traditional patterns to reflect this particular ‘mata o te Marama’. Motuhia means to severe, and this is a depiction of Huna (phase of the moon).
