Title: Te Pō

Artist: Makarini Solomon

Iwi: Ngāti Kahungunu

Materials: Acrylic, custom wood

Description: Large 3D Relief Painting

Te Pō is a depiction of ‘The Night’. To some iwi, the universe began within Te Pō. To others, it began within Te Kore. There are many phases within Te Pō, and it was a space and time where many things were created and formed, just like our babies are formed within the darkness of the womb. Papatūānuku herself was birthed within Te Pō and birthed her own children in the warmth of Te Pō. This time of the year is when the nights are longer than our days.  A good time to raise our gazes to the stars and enjoy celebrating Matariki as a whānau, creating and strengthening bonds with one another as well as remembering those who have gone before us.

Dimensions: 600 X 600 X 50 mm

Makarini Solomon

Nō Ngāti Kahungunu a Makarini. His early years of childhood were spent on a farm in a small country community known as Tiniroto - Place of Many Lakes, which is 57 km west inland of Gisborne. As a contemporary Māori artist, many things have influenced the vision of his Māori art and its future. Toihoukura and the tutors since he was a student there have played a major role in terms of his knowledge of all things Māori. These include whakapapa - geneology, tikanga - protocols, kapa haka - traditional performing arts, mōteatea - traditions performing arts, mōteatea - traditional chants and manaakitanga - hospitality. These aspects of Maoridom guide him and his artforms into the future. Exposure to a range of artists nationally and internationally has also been a great influence on him to work with a wide range of materials such as native timbers, metals, feathers, shells, fibre, clay and stone.
