Description: Framed Digital Print
A depiction of Tupuānuku, the eldest daughter of Matariki.
For Tainui Waka and Ngāti Raukawa the mother is Matariki, and her daughters are Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā, and Ururangi. Matariki and her daughters journey across the sky each year to visit their tupuna kuia, their great grandmother, Papatūānuku. During Haratua and Pipiri, each of the stars help Papatūānuku to prepare for the year to come, using their superpowers and gifts to bring mauri to her different environments. During Pipiri, Matariki rises again in the East to recommence the journey across the vast expanse of the Skyfather, Ranginui.
Ko Tupuānuku te matāmua o te whānau, connected to food grown in the ground. She busies herself spending time with Papatūānuku tending to plants and overseeing the care of growing kai, rongoā, and materials for kaakahu.
