Artist Profile – RINGA TOI

Kiriti Moore

Taranaki, Te Āti Awa, Rongowhakaata

Kiriti grew up in Hawke’s Bay where her mother was a metal artist. She allowed her the space to develop her creativity.  In 2000 her mum won the Wearable Arts Award. On her mother’s side she is Taranaki and Rongowhakaata, on her father’s side she is from Te Āti Awa.

Currently Kiriti is studying Toi Whakarākai at Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki.  Her first  teacher in year one was Pip Devonshire who taught her whatu and raranga, she fell in love with whatu immediately.  Her teacher this year is Elaine Bevan.  They are both amazingly talented women.

Kiriti is Inspired by whakapapa and the natural world.

During this Covid-19 lockdown Kiriti has enjoyed being able to weave in between looking after her 3 year old son Thomas and made a muka face mask.  This shows the ingenuity of Māori to adapt and be innovative.

I hope I am able to keep doing this toi as long as my hands will let me.
