Ia marama, ka tīpakohia e Toi Matarau he ‘whakataka ahurei.’ E mua kai kai, e muri kai hūare!

Whakataka Ahurei is a space for Toi Matarau to showcase limited and one-off taonga from the gallery.

Marewa Matariki ki te rangi e!

Haratua is the last month of the maramataka Māori where Matariki disappears from Ranginui and sets behind the western horizon into Papatūānuku. For Tainui Waka and Ngāti Raukawa the mother is Matariki, and her daughters are Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā, and Ururangi. Matariki and her daughters journey across the vast expanse of Ranginui each year to visit their tūpuna kuia, their great grandmother, Papatūānuku.

The appearance of Matariki and her daughters making this journey is the signal of the beginning of Pipirioterangi, Pipiri for short known as June the first lunar month of the maramataka Māori. During this time each of the stars help Papatūānuku prepare for the year to come, using their super powers and special gifts of mauri to nurture her different environments.

At Toi Matarau we have hand selected toi Māori that reflect this ancient kōrero tuku iho as part of our Whakataka Ahurei o Pipiri, June Art Drop.
