Toi Matarau Gallery is honoured to show powerful creations by Noël.
As kaitiaki, as protectors these Snakes serve as messengers carrying important Native medicine within their bodies symbolising their protective and healing intent. They remind us to be respectful at all times, to speak and behave in a good way towards others. Emulate by example the way in which we wish others to treat us, for if we don’t there is always a reaction, outcome or consequence that may or may not be favourable.
It is also why Snake Medicine is often positioned near doorways and entrances or is central to a space or room. Snake Medicine is commanding by nature and sometimes unpredictable showing us that we should never be cocky or arrogant, but instead be aware, alert and ready to respond.
While Snake medicine is not Native to Aotearoa, they are a generous gift of understanding Noël has shared with Māori and cultures of Aotearoa.

Noel Herkes Tekai
Noel Herkes Tekai acknowledges her own intuition and dream space as a source of storytelling that informs her textiles, puppetry, drawing, performance, sculpture and photography/film. Her practice approach is an ongoing process of balancing self-discipline and deep rest, integral to her healing and ability to maintain her art practice during her battle with cancer. The succession of handwork skills as spiritual and cultural preservation is a traditional practice upheld by Noel’s family in their indigenous culture. As a predominantly self-taught artist, Noel considers herself fortunate to have wildly creative and supportive parents. Noel focuses on the significance of presenting and preserving Indigenous-American styles and traditions, creating works that amplify indigenous symbolism and cultural visibility.
“The thing that keeps me going, honestly, is that there is maybe someone out there, another very marginalised person like myself, looking for pathways and somehow what I do will help.”
