‘Hinemoana brings me peace…’
Hinemoana is like the korowai that cloaks Tangaroa. The mountainous seas are the larger feathers, these deep strokes of clour are layered with smaller feathers of blue, green, white, red, orange, purple, black, grey.
The korowai of Hinemoana expands, contracts, and embraces all that is Tangaroa. At the edges of her korowai, Hinemoana occupies the space where land and sea converge. She is sometimes soft and forgiving, other times wild and forceful. She forges up rivers, against cliff faces, rocky shores and sandy beaches. Hinemoana brings transformation ti this meeting place of land and sea, where the mokopuna of the atua, sea creatures, people, birds, trees and plants spiral in the cycle of life.
This whakairo represents Hinemoana and is made of tōtara, acknowledging her relationship with Tāne-mahuta. The four feathers pay homage to Waitohi, a rangatira of Ngāti Toa Rangatira. The whai, stingrays, depict those that are often seen in the bay of my home at Hongoeka. For our whānau they are kaitiaki of our moana. When surfing, Hinemoana brings me peace, she strengthens my tinana, clears my mind and infuses my wairua with mauri.
