It is my assertion that ‘Hoe’ was made by artists from the Tūranga (Gisborne) region of Ngāti Rangiwaho.
The A-Hoe Trade Me Series by Steve Gibbs are part of his PhD works titled A-Hoe, being both a seafarers call and a name for the paddles that were part of the first trade and exchange encounter between Māori, Tahitian Navigator Tūpaia, and Lieutenant James Cook in 1769. The exchange took place off the coast of Whareongaonga, south of Tūranganui-a-Kiwa.
These drawings of hoe were made while locating those that were exchanged or gifted to Tūpaia in recognition of his status while visiting Tūranganui-a-Kiwa.
Whilst the originals were painted with kōkōwai (red ochre), Steve chose to paint his interpretations in blue to reflect that these original patterns come from a relationship with the ocean.
