A self-taught freelance artist of 34 years based in Ōtaki.  In 2001 Maakarita established Te Ihiroa Designs Ltd. as a whānau Māori owned and operated business specialising in contemporary Māori visual arts, mixed media, fashion – Tribal Fibres and film.  She became a licensed Toi Iho artist in 2003 in fashion design and visual arts in 2015.  Her works have been exhibited in galleries, museums and venues throughout Aotearoa and abroad with many pieces held in private collections.  She teaches part-time as an immersion Māori art teacher at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rito in Ōtaki while the remainder of her time is dedicated to her role as kaitiaki toi at the Māoriland Hub.  Maakarita is responsible for visual arts orientated projects and events.  This involves liaising and mentoring artists, creating arts related educational content delivery for tamariki and rangatahi in Ōtaki as well as managing the Toi Matarau Gallery.
