Iwi: Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Te Āti Awa ki Taranaki & Vaiala, Faleula and Safune SamoaToi: Ringa ToiAkoranga:Pēkere is a self-taught artist; while their interests include animation and film, their primary artistic medium is painting. Pēkere's creative practice serves as an extension of their emotional expression, allowing them to convey feelings through art that cannot be articulated verbally.Clara Hakaraia reflects on Pēkere and their toi below:“Pēkere is an artist that exudes their own unique visual language in everything they make. Meeting their art for the first time was similar to meeting them. Each painting, intriguing and distinctive. A spectrum of the many colourful versions of ourselves we carry within. At their very first exhibition at Pātaka, I remember silently observing something that felt hugely intimate, a sense that I already knew who they were just from the works I encountered. The first painting I bought from them was a small canvas of a sad face made with fabric and paint, that now hangs above my couch. They feel like my friends that although can’t talk, provide some other level of comfort and knowing that I don’t possess. A raw and deep expression of emotion through the solitary dance that is painting. I truly feel something when I look at their work. They speak to a part of me I cannot quite comprehend in words, perhaps a state of Te Kore. The realm of infinite potential, growth from the darkness, welcoming the music of light and colour into Te Ao Mārama.”
