Hapū: Te Rangitāwhia, Te Mateawa, Ngāti Kapumanawhiti ki Kuku
Description: Mixed Media
This piece was all about a two and half year fight, to go to hearing, mediation and then to the Environment Court to actively protect a known wāhi tapu and wāhi tupuna as the original pā site of Tukorehe ancestors. The Fierce Aroha stance was to protect an area from encroachment by golf link holes set out by a course developers at the Kuku Ōhau estuarine coast, by the Ōhau River. In the beginning Ngāti Tukorehe mandated entities had been inadequately informed of all details of the proposal.
While the consent has now been granted, the consent holder must work to conditions guided by the Environment Court and agreed to by affected Iwi and consent holder. This work of an embroidered skull (due to human remains present) draws on comprehensive oral and archival research into the former Ōhau 1 Block and its historic allocation to key tohunga and others of Ngāti Tukorehe in 1870s.
This work is all about the expression of Fierce Aroha shown by our people to stand up and address this proposed golf links from a tikanga Māori perspective. It was a gruelling process as an external Māori resource management person and planning teams were brought in to discredit and diminish our korero tuku iho. Thankfully, the Environment Court judges (Māori and non-Māori) agreed with our distinct narrative of place, and a no go zone or cultural heritage protection area has been set up with us. As part of an Iwi Kaitiaki Forum, Ngāti Tukorehe will work with the land holder to ensure the ongoing protection and sanctity of this area.
