Title: Manu Aute Matariki Longsleeve
Artists: Designed collaboratively by master carver Fayne Robinson, his son Tahu Robinson, and Māoriland Festival Director Maddy Hakaraia-De Young, the collection is a tribute to remembrance, renewal, and the stories that connect us across generations.
Design: For generations, manu aute have been flown during Matariki, carrying with them stories, remembrance and connection. Today, this beautiful tradition is being revitalised, reminding us of the enduring relationships between Papatūānuku, Ranginui, and those who have journeyed beyond.
Some traditions speak of manu aute as a way of sending messages to loved ones who have passed — “Kua whakarangatia koe” — Return, take your place amongst the stars alongside your ancestors who adorn the night sky.
Our collection honours this whakaaro.
We honour those who have gone before us and those whose legacy continues to inspire our journeys today.
Matariki is also a time to gather, to share kai, and to celebrate together. The collection features the whakataukī:
“Ngā kai a Matariki nāna i ao ake ki runga.”
At every shared meal, stories are remembered, retold, and newly created. At Māoriland, we celebrate the storytellers, for they are the keepers of our past and the creators of our future.
