Title: Papatūānuku
Artist: Hani Osborne
Iwi: Ngāti Raukawa
Description: Digital Print
One of a series of Atua Wāhine (Māori Goddesses) Māori anime style. An ideal gift for children but suitable for people of all ages.
Artist Statement: Referred to by some as Mother Earth, Papatūanuku was created for a climate change exhibition appearing a bit cheeky poking her tongue out. Papatūanuku is the mother of the earth, sky and everything in between. The kupu Māori that describes her being in Te Ao Mārama is ōnukurangi, all the spaces between Ranginui and Papatūānuku created by their separation story. Her love has no bounds, her beauty emanates as an extension of her love for Ranginui, their children and their descendants.
Papatūānuku, according to Tainui waka traditions, is referred to as the tūpuna kuia (great grandmother) of Matariki, the six daughters of Matariki. Matariki and her daughters journey across the sky each year to visit Papatūānuku. It is not often that the relationships between Papatūānuku, Matariki and relative kin are referred to.
