Makarini Solomon is a contemporary Māori artist whose work is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions and ancestral knowledge of his people. Born and raised in the rural community of Tiniroto – Place of Many Lakes – west of Gisborne, his early connection to land and whānau has shaped his artistic journey.
After graduating from Toihoukura, School of Māori Visual Art and Design, he is now Toi Māori Lecturer. His creative practice is guided by core principles of Te Ao Māori, including whakapapa, tikanga, kapa haka, mōteatea, and manaakitanga.
These cultural foundations inform and inspire his work as he carries Māori artforms, such as tāmoko and painting, into the future. Makarini draws influence from both national and international artists like Dempsey Bob, and works across a wide range of materials, including native timbers, metals, feathers, shells, fibre, clay, and stone. His multidisciplinary approach reflects a deep respect for traditional knowledge while embracing contemporary expression.
