Kūaka is an endeared iconic native bird and kaitiaki (animal guide) of Ngāti Kurī in Te Taitokerau where their natural habitat is on the Kokotā (white Silica sands)of Pārengarenga Harbour.
This work capture the movement and calls of the Kūaka (godwit) as they rise through the morning mist and begin their annual migration. Sweeping lines across the surface echo the pathways they carve through the sky — fleeting, rhythmic, and full of motion.
Created with ink and paint on heavy cold press paper, the works balance softness and energy, reflecting both the delicacy and endurance of these remarkable birds and their long journey across the world.

Over time, his vast portfolio of work contributed greatly to his online presence, gathering a strong support community behind him. After learning from his kuia that he was indeed a descendant of Te Whareumu, he rangatira no Ngāti Manu, Rīhari’s style underwent a necessary metamorphosis. His connection to Te Ao Māori reaffirmed his sense of storytelling through his practice and reflected through the shift in motifs and patterns - Tuna, Toroa, Kāhu, Kōwhaiwhai, and Pātiki began to emerge. Each brushstroke becomes an intentional play in balancing the positive and negative tension that flows throughout, creating an immersive environment to feel through- the wriggling skin of tuna, soft textured feathers of the manu flow off each other.
