Listening to the ocean: A modern parabale in bone and stone
This necklace, fashioned from Parāoa – Pilot Whale – Ear bonne and Onyx, embodies the ancient and ongoing dialogue between ocean and stone, between the living currents of the moana and the deep silence of whenua.
In te ao Māori, the world is alive with voices. The sea speaks, the stones remember, our ancestors, the great navigators, learn to cross vaast ocean not by force, but through listening, to the wind, the waves, the stars and the subtle murmurs of the natural world.
The ear bone of the whale among the densest substance of the earth, holds the sacred capacity for deep hearing. It anchors the resonance of the ocean’s song, the heartbeat of Tangaroa himself. Paired with Onyx a stone of protection and grounding, this form becomes a vessell for both journeys and stillness: a talisman for those navigate not only the seas, but the inner tides of life.
From a contemporary lens, this necklace becomes a modern day whakataukī, a proverb of listening along the way, when we move through the world with ears attuned to the whispers of place, of people and of spirit, beauty and meaning reveal themselves. Like the navigator guided by unseen currents, we discover that light is not something we chase, but something we hear – rising from the depths, carried in bone and stone, illuminating the path ahead.
Erihapeti McPherson has always considered herself a creator, as a self-taught artist, her practice has now spanned more than three decades. Primarily working in bone and stone in her art practice, she emphasises that her physical adornments are sacred jewellery, an extension of her spirituality. She believes she has always sought meaning in arrangement and this in effect has built the foundations from which her art practice flows from. As a rongoa practitioner Erihapeti has experience in Mirimiri, and Romiromi, developing the capacity to create traditional medicine, and use physical and energetic healing to aid others. Her strong sense of spirituality has informed a lot of her work as a registered Esoteric Hypnotherapist, Cultural and Spiritual Protection Agent. She seeks to support individuals, institutions and groups in need of spiritual safety and protection, offering Spiritual Guidance, Counselling and Specialised Hypnotherapy. Her works include sacred jewellery, perfume oils, and artwork as her own energetic and spiritual offering. Erihapeti honours her cultural roots while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, seeking to connect to those who engage with her pieces within Te Ao Māori.
