Mahana – Contemporary Woven Purse

Hinauri is a weaver inspired by traditional Māori techniques, specialising in Whatu and Tāniko. Since a young age, she had naturally been a creative with a longing desire to weave. It wasn't until later in life that she witnessed the excellence of creativity and weaving from the Hetet whānau in Waiwhetu, which reaffirmed her desire to pursue weaving. Her journey as a weaver began as she underwent the tutelage of Veranoa Hetet and the guidance of Erenora Hetet. The Hetet whānau became a source of inspiration in many different ways, continually instilling within Hinauri a sense of self-belief and confidence to become an established weaver. Known for her modern colour palettes, she uses traditional techniques to inform contemporary materials, and her careful consideration of colour composition makes her pieces distinctively her own.
