These Tukutuku explore the transformation of the whenua in Te Tairāwhiti by the rain from the North. Everything is relational. Mountains eroded, rivers transformed, land swallowed.
Each strand of Kiekie binds and strengthens the panel, as every raindrop strengthens the effects of the storm. The muted colours reference the quiet destruction of the swollen rivers and alludes to the remoteness of a region often forgotten.
In these works the pattern Roimata Tōroa visualises a snapshot of the deluge. With no beginning and no end, the pattern references the unpredictable power of nature. The Roimata Tōroa pattern also speaks of Pourangahua who causes destruction by taking shortcuts and not honouring the Atua.
