Rongomaraeroa is part of the diptych series Te Pākanga o Pōhutukawa, exploring the balance between conflict and peace through Māori cosmology. The work represents Rongomaraeroa — atua of peace, cultivation, and kūmara (sweet potato) — in contrast to Tūmatauenga, atua of war.
In this piece, Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, shelters Rongomaraeroa as he retreats beneath the earth, where he takes form as the kūmara. This imagery speaks to nourishment, resilience, and the strength found in community and care. Themes of abundance and Mana Wahine — the power and authority of women — are woven throughout the work.
Illuminated from behind the glass, Rongomaraeroa radiates with warmth and presence, shifting with the light and inviting quiet reflection on peace, protection, and the sustaining forces of life.

In 2025, she returned to this kaupapa with new skills and deeper intention, remaking 'Waitī' as a tribute to the life-sustaining energy of freshwater and the intimate relationships Māori have with our awa.Inspired by the bold aesthetic of Robyn Kahukiwa, particularly her depictions of atua and mana wāhine, this piece carries the energy of guardianship, whakapapa, and the gaze of ancestral presence. Waitī speaks to nourishment, care, and the need to protect the sacred waters that feed and shape us.
