Iwi: Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Ngāti Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Rangi
Description: Fine Art Photographic Print
Hand-cut matte fine art photographic print mounted on lasercut acrylic perspex
While connecting with the fibres of harakeke, Maija draws the parallels between ancestral practice and her photographic process to investigate indigenising the lens. Led by Atua Wahine, she weaves together light and fibre in an ongoing project named Te Aho Tuhura:
“Aho is the name for the weft or cross-thread of weaving. Aho means line of descent. Aho means radiant light. Guided by Hine Turama (Atua wahine of stars) and Hineteiwaiwa (Atua of weaving, cycles of the moon, and childbirth), I have explored how to collaborate light and harakeke through wānanga to indigenise my photographic practice. Experience a cosmic interpretation of Te Whare Pora (the house of weaving) made tangible by the light which reveals.”
Maija has woven with muka harakeke, rephotographed her weaves with light, and then taken it a step further by exploring the output in different formats (eg. installation, moving image, sculpture and print)
