Title: Te taringa o te moana – The ear of the ocean
Artist: Erihapeti McPherson
Iwi: Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu, Kotimana
Description: Incased Necklace
Whale ear bones (especially the tympanic bulla and periotoc/petrosal bones associated with hearing) are usually dense, relative to other skeletal bones. There is evidence that some Cetacean ear/rostral bones are exceptionally dense – perhaps among the densest biological bone tissues known. This incredibale resilient material, a gift from tangaroa, offers the wearer a divine object of strength and resilience.
Strung on Turquoise beads, sourced from iwi in California, Turquoise is a symbol of strength and protection.
Erihapeti McPherson has always considered herself a creator, as a self-taught artist, her practice has now spanned more than three decades. Primarily working in bone and stone in her art practice, she emphasises that her physical adornments are sacred jewellery, an extension of her spirituality. She believes she has always sought meaning in arrangement and this in effect has built the foundations from which her art practice flows from. As a rongoa practitioner Erihapeti has experience in Mirimiri, and Romiromi, developing the capacity to create traditional medicine, and use physical and energetic healing to aid others. Her strong sense of spirituality has informed a lot of her work as a registered Esoteric Hypnotherapist, Cultural and Spiritual Protection Agent. She seeks to support individuals, institutions and groups in need of spiritual safety and protection, offering Spiritual Guidance, Counselling and Specialised Hypnotherapy. Her works include sacred jewellery, perfume oils, and artwork as her own energetic and spiritual offering. Erihapeti honours her cultural roots while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, seeking to connect to those who engage with her pieces within Te Ao Māori.
