Tuna are a taonga like kai. In the Whanganui river they were traditionally an incredibly important food source. Whanganui had hundreds of pā tuna to catch eels as they went on their downstream migration to the ocean.
Colonisation led to degradation of the waterway which ked to eel loss. Between 1886 and 1888 over 500 tribal members petitioned to save the weir but by the turn of the century almost all were gone.
