Through the process of whiri the story of Claudette’s artwork is one of connection — to the whenua, moana, our ancestors and to the unseen forces that shape our world. Her work is a dialogue between the natural elements and the materials she uses, primarily muka from harakeke (New Zealand flax), which carries deep cultural significance. Through the practice of twisting and weaving, Claudette explores the dynamic relationship between the physical and the intangible, where light, air, gravity, and tension play as active participants. Her artwork is a manifestation of the interconnectedness of life, and an acknowledgment of our role as kaitieki (guardians) of the taiao (our natural world).
Note: Whiri Moana is adaptable, suspended at any height to evoke submersion, ascent, and shifting tides. Indoors, it casts moving shadows, responding to air currents. Outdoors, it interacts with wind, water, and light, reinforcing its connection to Tangaroa. Whether free-hanging, wall-mounted, or site-specific, it invites dynamic engagement with space.
