Ka tihei mauri ora a Hine-ahu-one. Ko tā tēnei toi ingoa kore he kōrero ki te uwhatanga me te āhuru mōwaitanga o te whare tangata.
He toenga tapahanga kiri tōtara ngā pou, he rite tonu hei whiunga para.
Proverb: Turn your attention to the essence of life.
During the creation of the first earth-formed-being each atua gifted a part of themselves to create the head, arms, legs, and entire body. The breath of consciousness instilled, breathing life, a beating heart, Hine-ahu-one became … A self-aware being. This untitled artwork speaks to the feminine life creating energy, and the warm, safe, comforting waters of the womb.
The pou are offcuts hewn from tōtara slabs, usually discarded. Wairere Pene deliberately chose the roughness and untreated nature of the timbre as the basis for her work. Here she has captured her ‘wāhinetanga’, using water and paint.
I wade in the discomfort of my wāhinetanga, lightly dancing on the threshold as the shadows precariously demands trust in the mystery of softness. Igniting Te Whare Tangata (womb), the inner realm of magic in which to ritualise and curiously compose ceremonies that feed the divine, and is in itself, life giving beauty. W. Pene.
