Title: Tawhirirangi
Artist: Kelcy Taratoa – Toi Iho Artist
Iwi: Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui
Description: Painting
This work is part of a series of geometric explorations between Māori customary artforms and Western abstraction. ‘Tawhirirangi’ is the name identifying the wharenui, with the entry door named Te Pūmotomoto-o-tikitiki-o-rangi. This is the entry point to Te Toi-o-ngā-rangi, the upper most realm. The work opens parallels between Western and Māori notions of celestial bodies and realms. Drawing from concepts within the teachings of Te Kauae Runga, the work alludes to the transcendence of time and place to connect with spiritual and universal bodies of knowledge.
