Iwi: Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui
Description: Painting
This work, is part of a series of geometric explorations between Māori customary artforms and Western abstraction. Rangiātea is a location in Hawaiki where the final canoes dispersed for migration. On the spiritual plane, Rangiātea is the name of the temple at Te Toi-o-Ngā-Rangi where Tānenui-ā-Rangi had wānanga with Io-Te-Matua. The work references the concept of journeys and voyages – both those of a physical and spiritual nature. The significance of Māori symbolism – holding ancient knowledge, wisdom and teachings is explored through the use of colour, abstraction and explorations of positive and negative space.
